At the close of the fifteenth
century, three young men in a city no bigger than Binghamton, NY changed
the cultural landscape of Renaissance Italy. In some respects, each of them
might be considered one of history's losers; yet in diverse and even contradictory
ways, they gave profound expression to modes of thought and action that endure
even in these times. Representing different forms of and stances toward
power, these youthful innovators --who almost certainly never met, and would
have found little common ground-- reflect and advance central aspects of
early modern thought.
